Environmental & Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)

What is an ESIA?

An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is a mandatory regulatory process in Uganda required by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) before any significant development project can be approved. It identifies, predicts, evaluates and mitigates the biophysical, social and other relevant effects of development proposals prior to major decisions and commitments.

Foresters Environmental Consultants Ltd is fully NEMA-certified (Reg. No. CC/EIA/168/20) to prepare and submit ESIAs for projects of all scales across Uganda and East Africa.

Who Needs an ESIA in Uganda?

Under Uganda's National Environment Act 2019 and the National Environment (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations, an ESIA or Project Brief is required for any project listed in the Second Schedule, including:

Project Screening & Scoping

We review your project design to determine the appropriate level of assessment required and scope the key environmental and social issues to investigate.

Baseline Data Collection

Comprehensive field surveys covering physical environment, ecology, biodiversity, socio-economic conditions, air/water quality and land use using GIS and remote sensing tools.

Impact Identification & Analysis

Systematic identification, prediction and evaluation of all potential positive and negative environmental and social impacts across all project phases.

Stakeholder Engagement

Community sensitisation, public consultation meetings, key informant interviews and focus group discussions in line with NEMA and World Bank disclosure requirements.

Mitigation & ESMP Development

Design of a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Plan with specific mitigation measures, monitoring protocols, roles, responsibilities and budgets.

NEMA Submission & Approval

Professional preparation and submission of the final ESIA report to NEMA with active follow-up to secure your environmental certificate on time.
